Bye Bye Treasure Box!

I have always had a treasure box in my classroom. I bought a big wooden one from Joann several years ago and painted it gold and boy I thought it was really great. And it was. For awhile. Now I am so sick of the whole “treasure box” idea. It really is time consuming to let every student visit the treasure box. I used to give my students “Star Bucks” (classroom money) and they could spend it on items in the treasure box. Items that were mostly purchased by me even though I did have some donations given to me by parents. It just became such a chore to drag the thing out weekly. I decided this year there would be no more treasure box! I had seen the behavior reward catalog idea from Mrs. Cooley a while back. I thought the idea was really cute and loved how the rewards were things that didn’t really cost me any money, time, or space so I decided to create my own. I somehow ended up with a bit of an owl theme in my classroom this year, so I made my reward catalog with an owl theme (complete with original owl graphics created by my husband!) and I also made a more generic one (with cute ThistleGirl graphics!) that anyone could use. Each student will have an incentive chart and they will earn stickers for it based on how they move up our classroom behavior ladder. I am using these incentive charts right now:

Here’s the description of the reward catalogs!

Tired of spending money on items for your treasure box? Try using a behavior catalog instead! This editable PowerPoint contains 24 ideas for FREE rewards for your students! It features a super cute owl theme!

Give each student an incentive chart or a punch card (not included, use your own!) and when they fill it up let them choose a reward from this behavior catalog. The following rewards are included:

Lunch Date – eat lunch in the room/pick a friend to eat in the room
Teacher’s Desk – sit at the teacher’s desk
Hat Day – wear a hat to school/in the classroom
Seat Swap – trade seats with a friend
Free time
iPod time
iPad time
Computer time
On the floor – do your work on the floor
Art studio – draw/doodle
Class DJ – bring a cd to school to share with class
Show & Tell – bring an item to share with the class

Class Doctor – give out band-aids, escort students to nurse
Class Career – choose which classroom job you want
Blank page – add your own rewards!

ALL of the text in this file is editable to fit the needs of your classroom and students and there is a cover like in the preview where you can add your name. Font used on reward page titles is Smiley Monster. The only thing that cannot be changed is the placement of the graphics. They are locked to protect them. (Graphics created by me – FirstGradeBrain). I have included 6 blank page templates so you can add in your own reward offering and clipart if there is a reward you’d like that is not already included.

This was designed in PowerPoint 2010. If you are using a different version, some of the features may not function correctly or look a little different. Simply open the PowerPoint, edit the text description of the rewards to fit your needs, print and then bind together or place in a binder.

Whoo’s Behavior Reward Catalog – Owl Themed

Super Kids Reward Catalog – General kid themed

My new students are really excited about these rewards! They have been asking to look at the reward catalog a lot! I’m glad they are excited about it as much as I am! I made them in PowerPoint so you could edit the text if you needed to. There is also a blank slide in both so you can add your own clipart and rewards if you need to! Both of these catalogs are available on my Teachers Pay Teachers store and my Teacher’s Notebook store.

  1. I was wondering about the process of the kids selecting their reward from the catalog, how do you manage this?
