Daily Schedule

I’m linking up with Falling Into First’s linky on Daily Schedules. My schedule changes slightly every year and it evolves throughout the year. I do believe that routine and consistency are important for sure, but when something is not going well for me I modify it until it works for me and my students. For example, for awhile I moved my whole group math lesson to before lunch so I could fit it in the bulk of my instruction before lunch, recess, and specials. We have lunch, recess, and specials all in a row so after specials the kids are pretty much “done” for the day. That being said, here is my general daily schedule:

7:45                        Morning Assesmbly, Pledge, Announcements

7:50 – 8:10            Put away things, Read to Self

8:10 – 8:30           Calendar Math, Drops in the Bucket

8:30 – 10:00         Reading Block (Saxon phonics, comprehension skill, read alouds, vocabulary, etc.)

10:00 – 10:30       Reading Stations (Daily 5)(Word Work, Technology, Writing, Tag Readers)

10:30 – 10:55        Lunch

10:55 – 11:10         Recess (also known as “Teacher Directed Physical Education Instruction.” Seriously, that’s what goes in my plan book…)

11:10 – 11:30         Restroom/water break, prepare for specials

11:30 – 12:30        Specials/My Planning (which is usually filled with meetings….)

12:30 – 1:15          Writing

1:15 – 2:15             Math

2:15 – 2:30            Read to Self

2:30 – 2:35           Clean Up

2:35                       Dismissal 

We are only supposed to have 15 minutes of recess which I think is… well I won’t say what I really think. We are required to have 90 minutes of reading and 90 minutes of math instruction. We are required to document so much in our lesson plan books. I should post a copy of my plans sometime. I’ve seen other teachers post theirs and I cannot believe how little there is on there! Don’t get me wrong, I’m notsaying that’s bad! Lesson plans should be for the teacher in my opinion and not for anyone else. As I always say, you can make anything look good on paper but that doesn’t tell the true story of what goes on in a classroom on a day to day basis. It can be very time consuming to do lesson plans. I always love seeing other daily schedules. I’m envious of those that start later that 7:45. I am so not a morning person!

  1. I am jealous of your schedule! On the upside, we don’t start until 8:40 in the morning:) My specials are all over the place (never at the same time ranging from early morning until later afternoon). About the only consistent thing that I have is that math is always in the afternoon which is due to time constraints for our required 90 reading/language arts block. Wednesdays though things off even more as we have prof. development from 7:15-8:40 in the morning, but get out an hour earlier at 2:55 instead of 3:55 on M,T,T,F.. Plus I have library on Wednesdays as well this year. I would love to have more consistency!

  2. I can’t get over how much more time it appears you have to teach but where is YOUR lunch time???
    We go 8:00-2:30 with kids although they can arrive between 730-8.
    My 1st grade day looks like this:
    opening/calendar (15 min)
    45-60 minute math
    15 min snack break
    15 min word work/spelling (always take longer)
    30min writing
    15 min for PATHS, STAR STUDENT, etc
    Lunch & Recess for kids (my lunch break) 10:55-11:45
    15 min transition time (read aloud)
    Specials 12-1245 (one day a week MUST be team planning)
    12:55-1:10 Reading Mini Lesson
    1:10-2:00 Daily 5/Reading Groups
    2:00-2:15 Science/Social Studies (THIS NEVER HAPPENS….who can teach science in 15 min)
    2:15 Packup, Behavior Calendars, Etc
    2:25-2:30 Dismissal

    1. I eat lunch the same time my students do. I drop them off in the cafeteria and me and my team eat together in one of our classrooms. And I hear what you mean about science and social studies. I am told to focus on reading and math. We try to integrate science and social studies into other areas as much as we can.
