Daily Schedule

So I’m a little late on this one (Better late than never?!) but I’m sharing my daily schedule. This is the schedule I used this school year. I am working on a much better one for next year incorporating Daily 5! Yeah! 🙂

7:45 – 8:30: Calendar Math on SmartBoard, Morning Work (Drops in the Bucket)

8:30 – 10:30: Reading Block (Phonics/Spelling, Comprehension, Fluency, HeidiSongs, Literacy Work Stations)

10:30 10:55: Lunch (I HATE having the first lunch! Shouldn’t Kindergarten eat before 1st grade???)

10:55 – 11:30: Recess ( We aren’t supposed to have “recess” for that long. 😛 )

11:30 – 12:30: Specials

12:30 – 1:00: Writing

1:00 – 2:00: Math

2:00 – 2:30: Math Workstations or Theme (Science/Social Studies)

2:30: Clean up room, prepare for dismissal

2:45: First bell rings to dismiss students

Netx year I’m switching from doing Debbie Diller Literacy Work Stations to Daily 5. I love Debbie Diller, but I think Daily 5 will be great for my students. I’m still going to do Diller’s Math Workstations though. I’m pretty much told to focus my day on reading, writing, and math and not to worry about Science and Social Studies. It’s sad really. I wish I had more time in the day most days.

I think you will LOVE Daily 5! We were told to focus on reading and math, too. I have an hour less each day so I am envious of the time you do have!

Could you post more info about Daily 5? Whose concept is it? Looks like? Also, we are looking into a phonics/spelling program. Have you ever heard of Fundations? What do you use?

The Daily 5 is a book written by the Two Sisters (Gail Boushey and Joan Moser). They have a couple of websites:

    http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/main.cfm

    http://www.the2sisters.com/

They have also written a book called The Cafe Book.

The Daily 5 is way to manage your classroom so that you can work with groups or students or individuals. Instead of literacy centes, students engage in Daily 5 stations which are: Read to Self, Read to Someone Else, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. (Called the Daily 5 because there are 5 choices) Students get to choose what they work on (or some teachers assign what they do). The Cafe book provides many great ideas on how to incorporate the actual lessons you teach. Cafe stands for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding vocabulary.

I have head of Fundations but am not very familiar with it. I use the phonics/spelling component of my Scott Foresman Reading Street series. This year we are adding in Sing, Spell, Read, Write as well.
