Daily Phonics Review – Complete Set Finished

Back in 2013, I created the first unit of Daily Phonics Review. It really was a labor of love to create those sheets. I am so happy they are finally all finished! I created these review sheets while I was using Reading Street so the skills match the sequence they are presented in the series. However, you could use these review sheets at any time with any series if you feel your students need some more practice with mastering their phonics skills. Nowhere on the sheets does it mention the reading series or week numbers.

There are four sheets for each week and there are two different versions of each sheet. One is the regular sheet with no modifications and the second sheet is differentiated for students who may need modifications. You can pass out both sheets to different students and the whole class can work through them together and the same time.

If you are using Reading Street, the weekly breakdown is as follows:

Day 1 – Introduce new skill
Day 2 – Introduce second skill of the week
Day 3 – Review skills from previous week
Day 4 – Review skills from Day 1 and 2

Each sheet is broken down into five sections. Here’s a quick rundown of how the daily phonics review sheets work.

Sound Review – In this section, students review previously taught phonics skills as well as the newly introduced skill for the day/week. The teacher will say “write the letters that make the /sh/ sound” and students will write “sh” on their paper. As the year progresses, there will be more than one correct answer. For example, ‘tch’ and ‘ch’ both make the same sound so both should be written as an answer. Answer keys are provided for each sheet so you will have a guide as to what sounds to review. Of course – please do adapt this to your students’ needs and cover the skills they struggle with more often.

Syllable Count – This section was to help me cover the Amazing Words from the reading series. If you’re using a different series, the words are a good way to introduce some new vocabulary to your students. We figured out how many syllables each word had and then briefly discussed the meaning of the words or verbally made up sentences with the words. Students just write the number of syllables the word has on their paper.

Spell It – This section has students apply their new knowledge of the week’s skill as well as previously taught skills. On the differentiated version, students fill in the missing letters from the words as to not overwhelm them with having to write out the whole word.

Add the Ending - This section has students write and spell words and add a suffix/ending to them. Sometimes we make the words plural. Sometimes we make the word so that it happened in the past (-ed). The first few reviews actually have students match upper and lowercase letters to each other but adding endings is covered on the vast majority of the lessons.) As with the Spell It section, the differentiated version has students fill in the missing letters from the words as to not overwhelm them with having to write out the whole word.

The Hodge Podge Section – The last section is always different. Sometimes students have to look at pictures and circle the correct word. Sometimes they have to write words in ABC order. Sometimes they have to circle the endings. It just varies from day to day and week to week. The students are practicing and review skills in different ways.

There are five units of Daily Phonics Reviews available. Each unit description breaks down what skills are covered in that unit. I have received positive feedback from many teachers describing how their students’ have made great progress with their phonics skills and are mastering more skills than in previous years. It makes me so happy to hear this! I created these reviews to help my own students because I saw a need for a structured review daily to constantly review skills. It took me a while, but I’m happy all five units are completed so teachers can use them consistently through the year. They are available on Teachers Pay Teachers as well as Teachers Notebook.
